Conversational Spanish
This course is designed to reinforce and expand your ability to engage in basic Spanish conversations with greater confidence and fluidity. It aims to strengthen speaking and listening skills through interactive and practical activities while improving pronunciation, reading comprehension, and storytelling abilities. Emphasis will be placed on using Spanish in everyday situations, encouraging spontaneous communication and natural expression. You'll also develop a broader vocabulary and familiarity with common expressions. The goal is to make speaking Spanish easier, more natural, and—most importantly—fun by offering opportunities to practice speaking, listen actively, and connect with fellow learners. No pressure, just progress at your own pace with guidance and encouragement every step of the way. You don’t need to be an expert but you will need some basic Spanish knowledge. **This class is recommended for students who have had previous Spanish language experience. German I (Online)
Are you curious about learning the German language, but don’t know where to start? Then this class is for you, because it is designed for people with no previous German experience. The topics we will discuss include greetings, family, friends, shopping, and food. We will meet weekly on Zoom and use the course, Die neue Linie 1 A1.1, and the Google Classroom learning management system. Spanish 1A-EHSI (Monday)
*There are two sections of Spanish 1A (Monday or Thursday). If you have some prior Spanish experience, we recommend signing up for the Monday class. If you have no Spanish experience, we recommend signing up for the Thursday class. This will help the instructor tailor the class to the needs of the students. This course provides a fun, engaging introduction to Spanish. Learn basic sentence construction, verbs, pronunciation, and useful travel phrases and tips for Spanish-speaking countries. Participants will enjoy practicing together, sharing common interests, and gaining practical language skills for an enjoyable experience. These are the key instructional objectives based on the course description: 1. Basic Sentence Construction: Students will learn to form simple sentences and phrases in Spanish. 2. Verb Usage: Students will understand and use essential verbs in basic conversations. Some differences between Spanish and English verbs. 3. Pronunciation: Students will practice and improve their Spanish pronunciation for better communication. 4. Vocabulary: Students will acquire some basic and useful vocabulary. 5. Cultural Insight: Students will gain cultural knowledge by discussing travel experiences and common interests with fellow participants as well as learning the peculiarities of different Spanish speaking countries. 6. Practical Application: Students will practice conversational Spanish in a fun and engaging environment. The instruction format includes a combination of instructor-led lessons, group discussions, and interactive practice. Spanish 2A
Participants should have attended Spanish 1A & 1B with Jorge and/or have some prior knowledge of the Spanish language. The program builds on what we covered in Level 1, adding new verbs, vocabulary, and an introduction to the past tense for verbs. The instructor will adjust and modify the course according to the needs of his students. Class Overview: Objective:To build upon foundational Spanish knowledge, enabling students to confidently engage in conversations, understand basic grammatical structures, and gain cultural insights into Spanish-speaking countries. Course Content 1. Grammar Expansion of regular and irregular verb conjugations in the present tense (ir, tener, hacer, querer, venir). Introduction to the preterite tense for expressing past actions, including both regular and common irregular verbs (fui, hice, quise, tuve). Reflexive verbs for describing daily routines and self-directed actions (levantarse, ducharse, llamarse). Use of subject pronouns (yo, tú, él/ella, nosotros, etc.) and object pronouns (me, te, lo/la, nos, les). Possessive adjectives and pronouns (mi, tu, su, nuestro, mío, tuyo, suyo). Building complex sentences with conjunctions (porque, pero, aunque, entonces, así que). 2. Vocabulary Thematic vocabulary covering: Daily routines and activities. Food and dining. Travel and directions. Shopping and common items. Family and relationships. Expansion of question words (qué, cómo, cuándo, cuánto, quién). 3. Communication Skills Practical conversational scenarios: Ordering food in a restaurant. Asking for and giving directions. Describing daily routines and past experiences. Emphasis on pronunciation and fluency. Strategies for asking questions and providing explanations. 4. Cultural Insights Introduction to traditions, holidays, and daily life in Spanish-speaking countries. Use of idiomatic expressions for everyday communication (tener hambre, estar en las nubes). The instruction format includes a combination of instructor-led lessons, group discussions, and interactive practice. Students will engage in guided conversations, pronunciation exercises, and group activities to reinforce learning in a fun and supportive environment.
